Just to get started on this topic, I was raised around a lot of classic rock. My parents have fantastic music taste and have passed that on to me. Of course, even if they didn't like rock music, I probably would. Also note that this is just my personal list, these bands are the ones that I listen to the most and who have influenced me the most in my music. Remember, everyone has a different taste and opinion on music, and thats a great thing because otherwise we would all be the same.
☆LED ZEPPELIN: It's pretty much impossible to leave Led Zeppelin off of a best rock list. Most bands can't even be compared to this one. Led Zeppelin has some of the greatest guitar solos in the world, Jimmy Page literally re-defined the way that people play the guitar. And Robert Plant? Don't get me started on his voice, if I could sing like him, I would. John Paul Jones was one of the fastest bassists, keeping up with Plant during his solos, and we all know that not many bassists possess that kind of skill. And then you have John Bonham who was one of the greatest drummers to ever sit behind a drum set. This mans contribution to rock music were revolutionary, no one can compare to that.
In a nutshell, Led Zeppelin was an incredibly talented band with talented members. Each song is a journey, and no song is exactly alike. Classic.
☆PINK FLOYD: Roger Waters is one of the few true musical geniuses also changing the way that people hear music. Accompanied by a great guitarist David Gilmour, along with Richard Wright and Nick Mason. Pink Floyd ruled the 70's with their top notch albums along with what I have heard were phenomenal live performances! I only wish that I could have been in my 20's during that time just for that particular reason.
☆ AC/DC: I absolutely love AC/DC, they have the best riffs, also the fact that they haven't really changed from the start and never forgot about Bon Scott either. Brian Johnson had a huge roll to fill, and he was such a success at filling it. I really can't say enough good things about this band. I mean really, I listen to them daily. Catchy, wonderful, and brilliant.
☆ GUNS N' ROSES: Guns N' Roses. Rude, cruel, bad boys...but a romantic side in their melodies none the less. Axl Rose knew how to put on a mean show, Slash with his deadly guitar scream playing like no other, rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin (Who unfortunately left the band at the height of their fame, but who has released many solo albums since), bassist Duff McKagen who later released his solo album, Believe in Me (1993), and drummer Steven Adler who was actually (and very unfortunately) fired from GNR in 1990. Fortunately now Steven is the drummer for Adler's Appetite and has continued to hold that position since 2012, also appearing in television shows.
Today Axl Rose continues to tour as the only original member of GNR. I can't comment on the music that they do now, as I have not actually listened because I want to keep the original GNR that I know and love in mind.
☆ BLACK SABBATH: An incredibly influential band, with fantastic members. The band was started by guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, singer Ozzy Osbourne, and drummer Bill Ward. Over the years the band has experienced multiple line-up changes, with Tony Iommi the only consistent presence in the band. The band has been cited as the pioneers of heavy metal often having occult and horror themed songs. Other than that Black Sabbath also composed songs dealing with social instability, political corruption, the dangers of drug abuse and apocalyptic prophecies of the horrors of war. Really, who couldn't fall in love with original Black Sabbath?
I could go on and on all day about what classic rock bands I love, or who I think was at the top during that time, but in the end its all up to you to decide the top.
