We all know the popular "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll", and most of us find it completely glamorous, but what we don't see is the people who are Rock & Roll and the struggles that they go through living a life full of temptation.
Over the past decades we've lost many musicians to drugs and alcohol. Many of the people were music icons, living in the public eye, partying way to hard, and having their life end way to early because of an addictive thrill. Such iconic faces were Jim Morrison, who reportedly had a heart attack induced by the use of heroin, Elvis Presley, Kurt Cobain who died from an inflicted gun shot wound while under the influence of a deadly amount of heroin.
In recent years there haven't been as many deaths of musicians as there have been in the past, but the influence of drugs within the music scene is still apparent. Now a days though, most musicians talk about it freely, as a way to show their fans that they've struggled and it's probably not the path that they want to take.
In a recent issue of Alternative Press Christofer Drew talked a little about his experimental time with drugs and how his "erratic" behavior affected his friends and family, showing how his attitude while on drugs was less than desirable and how he had come to push away the people who cared most, using a metaphorical cliff to show that he was so close to the edge and could have jumped, but rather took a few steps back to think about what he was doing. Christofer Drew has been sober since the summer of last year, and finds himself having more fun. I applaud Christofer for speaking about his problems, and am happy that he's happy with his decision.
In all honesty, I don't view people differently based on whether or not they do drugs. We all make "mistakes", right? There are things that we aren't all proud of.
But here is the main point of why I believe that some musicians chose drugs. The bottom line is, it's us. Yep, you read that right. We intrude into the daily lives of musicians and just continue to ask for more and more from them, with a sense of entitlement, and that's wrong. Sometimes we put so much pressure on musicians to be Gods and to be perfect that they just want to escape, but with media and shows and us showing pens and paper into their hands asking for autographs, begging for them to follow us on twitter, and begging for a chance just to be noticed, we put to much pressure on them. So much that they need an escape, and sometimes drugs and alcohol become that escape.
Remind you guys, I'm not preaching. Each to their own, do drugs or don't. Drink, or don't. It's ultimately your decision and I want all of you to come to your conclusion about this. I'm not adding in anything in personal life here, we all know that that would be a mess if I did.
And that pretty much concludes that. Just be careful, safe, take all things into consideration.
*Mind that when I speak about drugs, that I am NOT including marijuana. Remember, weed does grow in nature it is completely natural (Except for when laced.)
